Site:  Nasca Clados Number:  238 Culture:  Nasca Description:  effigy vessel in the form of a recurved step-fret design, ID number missing, Amano Museum, Lima. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 7 Phase. Iconographic Features:  Chained Heads (Proulx 2007) consisting of Anthropomorphic Mythical Being with Attached Jagged Staff (grey), Eyeless Rayed Face (light grey), two Rayed Faces (white, blue), and Rayed Feline Face (light blue). Their protruding tongues are used to link them together into a chain. Gesture of tongue-touching indicates fighting. Iconographic Features:  Paracas style Anthropomorphic Mythical Being with Attached Jagged Staff or Zackenstab-Dämon (Seler 1923) depicted with feline head, human body, human arms and legs, and a jagged (feline serpent-)staff attached to the forehead ornament. Anthropomorphic Mythical Being with Attached Jagged Staff is depicted with extended tongue in the form of a feline serpent. It holds war trophies, i.e. two forehead ornaments and trophy heads. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 7 Phase. Iconographic Features:  Bird Mythical Being 9 (BMB-9) as motif on the mantle of the nobleman/warrior. BMB-9 is depicted with Rayed Feline Face head type, human arms, and wings. Feathers replaced by rays. BMB-9 is depicted in bird’s-eye view. It holds feathered staffs and trophy heads. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 5 Phase. Iconographic Features:  Pampas Cat Mythical Being and Bird Mythical Being 8 (BMB-8). Pampas Cat Mythical Being depicted with feline head, feline body, human body, human arms and human legs. It holds a club and devours pepinos. Pampas Cat Mythical Being is not identical to Pampas Cat. Site:  Nasca Clados Number:  245 Culture:  Nasca Description:  cup bowl, C-11901, M.N.A.A.H.-Lima. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 4 Phase. Iconographic Features:  Standing Anthropomorphic Mythical Being holding Feline Man and trophy head. Feline Man is depicted with showing ribs, a common convention to express starvation. Note that Feline Man is grasping the snake hair of the Standing Anthropomorphic Mythical Being, a gesture that clearly indicates fighting. The painting is outstanding because it shows a supernatural being grasped by its hair indicating it as defeated. Site:  Nasca Clados Number:  246 Culture:  Nasca Description:  painted textile, mantle, G.E.M. (presently Stockholm). Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 4 Phase (?). Iconographic Features:  One of the most complex scenes in early Nasca iconography portraying more than 20 supernatural beings involved in battle. Feline Man (bottom center) holds a trophy head and a knive with two obsidian blades. To his left Feline Killer Whale with its bifurcated tail appears. Anthropomorphic Mythical Being with Jagged Tail holding a club appears at the upper right, while the Anthropomorphic Mythical Being with snake hair holding a knive and a trophy head appears at the top center. Note that some of the defeated supernatural beings are grasped by their tongues. Four large beings are placed at the corners of the painting, one of them (bottom right) is depicted running. Several beings hold trophies (birds, fishes, forehead ornaments). The illusion of space is created by extensive use of the convention of overlapping. Site:  Nasca Clados Number:  247 Culture:  Nasca Description:  double-spout-and-bridge bottle in the shape of a vessel filled with lúcumas, ID number missing, M.N.A.A.H.-Lima. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 5 Phase. Iconographic Features:  Standing Anthropomorphic Being in frontal view holding man and trophy head. Two bubble-like extrusions from the mouth contain processions of men who are holding beakers. Between the legs, one man pulling chicha(?) out of a large ritual vessel, and two pairs/twins of nude men (pairs/twins of sacrifice victims?) are depicted. Note that the man in the hand of the Standing Anthropomorphic Being is grasping his own hair. Site:  Nasca Clados Number:  248 Culture:  Nasca Description:  cup bowl, Nasca Valley, C-33508, M.N.A.A.H.-Lima. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period 5 (EIP 5), Nasca 5 Phase. Iconographic Features:  Standing Anthropomorphic Being in frontal view holding man and trophy head. Extended tongue in the shape of a snakelike streamer emerges from the mouth, terminating in a feline head which in turn bifurcates into two branches, each containing processions of men holding beakers. Beneath two foxes are portrayed devouring a headless corpse (prison warrior). Between the legs three men with beakers are portrayed surrounding a large vessel with foamig corn beer (chicha). Site:  Nasca Clados Number:  249 Culture:  Nasca Description:  effigy vessel, ID number missing, M.N.A.A.H.-Lima. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 6 Phase. Iconographic Features:  modeled example of a late Effigy Harvester (Proulx 2007, 93) holding trophy head. It is depicted with snake arms (snakes are painted on arms). It wears a conical hat showing the Rayed Face whose face is painted with dots imitating the surface of a cob of maize. The Harvester is shown in a seated position and has Heads Surrounded by Trophy Heads (HST) painted on its body. The figure’s back covers the representation of an elaborated version of the Face Being with Snake Rays. Face Being with Snake Rays wears a headdress that shows a tricephalic serpent (BS-2 ?) symbolizing the rainbow. A nearly identical being is portrayed on a cup bowl from burial 2 of Wayurí, Río Grande de Nasca, excavated by Tello in 1927. Related Themes:  Click link to see related item(s) CL 154
