Site:  Nasca Clados Number:  170 Culture:  Nasca Description:  portrait effigy vessel, C-04558, M.N.A.A.H.-Lima. Chronological Era:  Early Intermediate Period (EIP), Nasca 7 Phase. Iconographic Features:  one of the finest Nasca 7 Phase effigy vessels: nobleman holding sling or coca bag (chuspa). Elaborately decorated garments show multi-figured scene including Feline Serpent, Rayed Face, One-Eyed Rayed Faces, Round Faces, and heads of monkeys (?). Feline Serpent and Rayed Face depicted with Bloody Mouth Head Type. Body of Feline Serpent with snakes enclosed. Cacti close to Feline Serpent indicate desert environment. Scattered spears indicate battlefield and combat.

FS-2 depicted with pepino or capsicum pepper (ají) emanating from the body. Trophy head with sprouting plant attached to the border of the body. Body with enclosed capsicum pepper (ají) and hair hanks. FS-2 wears a forehead ornament and a feather headdress, and holds pepino or capsicum pepper (ají). Shaft of a bloody club is also visible. Pepino or capsicum pepper (ají) emanating from the serpent body. Body with enclosed capsicum pepper (ají). Rayed Feline Head depicted with pepino or capsicum pepper (ají) emanating from the head. Although depicted with the same type of head and often interpreted as abbreviation of several mythical beings Rayed Feline Face is a character on its own. Pepino or capsicum pepper (ají) emanating from the body. FS-3 holds pepino or capsicum pepper (ají), and wears an unusual type of mouth mask in the shape of a bicephalic serpent.

Extended tongue in the shape of a serpent with Feline Serpent attached. Tunic is flanked by two snake streamers. Shoulders replaced by beans. Iconographic Features:  Anthropomorphized Forehead Ornament with extended tongue holding a trophy head by the hair. The tip of the extended tongue touches the trophy head.
