The Royal Genealogy of Palenque

Version 1: The 'traditional' view

Variations on the theme:
Schele (1983:122) included a now-discarded individual, "Xoc", as a third son of K'inich Janab' Pakal I. She also listed Chak Sutz' as an older brother of K'inich Akul Mo' Nab' III ('Chaacal III') and considered both to be sons of K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II. In addition, Schele postulated an additional ruler, "Casper", between K'inich Akul Mo' Nab' III and K'inich K'uk' B'alam II.

Greene Robertson (1985:114-117) followed Schele in all details except the speculation concerning the later "Casper".

Schele and Freidel (1990:229, 469) revised the argument concerning "Xoc": he was a member of the royal lineage, but not a brother of K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II, nor did he rule. Ix Kinuw, the mother of K'inich Akul Mo' Nab' III, was the third child of K'inich Janab' Pakal I.

Ringle (1996:55) was the first to argue that Tiwol Chan Mat (he called him Lord T231) was the third son of K'inich Janab' Pakal I and the father of K'inich Akul Mo' Nab' III.

Bernal (2000:27) favoured the third child of K'inich Janab' Pakal I as Ix Kinuw Mat, not Tiwol Chan Mat. He also was the first to add K'inich Kan B'alam III to the royal genealogy of Palenque.

Martin and Grube (2000:154-175) mentioned the possibly that Ix Yol Ik'nal was the sister of Kan B'alam I, even though they favour the 'traditional' view that she was his daughter. They also considered the possibility that Janab' Pakal "the Elder" was the second son of Ix Yol Ik'nal, rather than her husband. In addition, they follow Stuart (1999) in considering a new ruler, "Muwan Mat", to have held power briefly between AD 612 and 615, although his(?) genealogical placement (and identity) is uncertain. Finally, they follow Ringle in regarding Tiwol Chan Mat as most likely the third son of K'inich Janab' Pakal I and Ix Tz'akb'u Ajaw.
