U Pakal K'inich Janab' Pakal II is not named in this passage, but is likely the protagonist or at least involved in the ritual, on the basis of Text 2, which involves the same date and does name him.
The context of this passage is not clear, but U Pakal K'inich Janab' Pakal II is named at p33-p36. Only his child name, 'U Pakal K'inich', is recorded, and the date is during the reign of K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II.
U Pakal K'inich Janab' Pakal II is not named in this passage, but is likely the protagonist of the preceding passage (Text 1) and is also the subject of the following passage (Text 4). In view of this, it is quite likely that U Pakal K'inich Janab' Pakal II is the protagonist of this passage also.
U Pakal K'inich Janab' Pakal II is portrayed on this monument. I assume that the portrait belongs with the 9.14.2.9.0 event.
Only a small part of this tablet has been found, in several fragments (Schele and Mathews 1979, No. 81). One fragment was found in the rubble below the Temple of the Foliated Cross; two others were found in the northern part of the Palace. The larger fragment containing U Pakal K'inich Janab' Pakal II's portrait came to light in the early 1990s. It is published on the cover of Maya Cosmos (Freidel, Schele, and Parker 1993); in that book the authors identify the portrait as that of K'inich Janab' Pakal I.
Mention should be made also of an individual named U Pakal K’inich who is mentioned in the painted inscriptions of Naj Tunich (Stone 1995:166, 174). The date of the passage, designated Naj Tunich Drawing 29, has been generally accepted as (9.17.0.6.3) 6 Ak’b’al 16 Xul, or 23 May, AD 661 (Stone 1995:163, 164). It is possible, though, that the date of the passage could be (9.14.7.11.3) 6 Ak’b’al 16 Xul or even (9.14.4.0.3) 6 Ak’b’al 16 K’ank’in (5 June 719 or 13 Nov 715, respectively), and if so, it is possible that the reference could be to a pilgrimage to Naj Tunich by the young Palenque prince. On balance, however, I believe that the U Pakal K’inich named at Naj Tunich is a different individual.
