| Although there is only one explicit piece of information concerning the family history of Akul Mo' Nab' II, his place in Palenque's royal genealogy seems quite straightforward. The explicit piece of information is in the Tablet of the Cross, where we are told ( glyphs T8-T9) that Akul Mo' Nab' II was the grandson of Akul Mo' Nab' I. Akul Mo' Nab' I was born in AD 465, his successor K'an Joy Chitam I in AD 490, and Akul Mo' Nab' II in AD 523. These births involve nice generational spacings of 25 and 33 years, and it is almost certain that the three were in a direct patrilineal relationship. Kan B'alam I, the king who succeeded Akul Mo' Nab' II, was born just 381 days after him and was almost certainly his younger brother. The situation of Kan B'alam I's successor, Ix Yol Ik'nal, is more doubtful. Epigraphers have traditionally considered her to have been the daughter of Kan B'alam I, but she could just as likely have been the daughter of Akul Mo' Nab' II or even their younger sister. |
