Maya Plant Use:  Food, medicine, products, ornamental uses, fiber, fuel, gum, dye and spice/flavoring/preservative.
Botanical Significance:  Given the many uses of this plant it is not surprising that it would be found represented on ancient Maya ceramics.
Ritual Significance:  Used as a source for red dye. Bixa orellana or achiote (annatto) was also added to the to the sacred Maya chocolate drink.
