Botanical Significance:  Many members of the Cucurbitaceae family were of great importance to the ancient Maya and thus frequently depicted in Maya art. The specific uses of this plant are varied. Intestinal parasites, skin problems, anemia, diabetes, sore throat and mouth sores are among the many uses of this plant (Arvigo and Balick, 1998).
