ANCIENT MAYA BOTANICAL RESEARCH

Genus:  Haematoxylon
Species:  campechianum
Authority:  L.
Common Name:  logwood, palotinta, inkwood
Maya Plant Use:  Indigofera sp. was a valued dye by the ancient Maya. It is the source of “Maya blue” that we see on ceramics and in wall murals. (See Economic Botany). Inkwood (Haematoxylon campechianum) was also used as a plant for dying textiles and other objects.
